There are three main factors; these are Charge cycles, The temperatures you expose your device to, & the battery percentage that you store your device at.
Starting with charge cycles.
Lithium-Ion batteries work in charge cycles; a charge cycle is when your device consumes equal to 100% of its battery capacity. The more charge cycles consumed, the faster your device’s battery health diminishes.
The main thing you will need to know about Lithium-Ion batteries is that once your battery drops below 20%, it will consume one charge cycle, and every time you charge your device over 80%, it adds additional stress to your device, which in turn will chemically age your battery at a faster rate.
This is why Apple uses Optimized charging on all Macbooks, which reduces the rate your Macbook is charged once it reaches 80% battery in order to preserve battery health.
So now that we understand how Lithium-Ion batteries work, what is the best charge cycle to help maintain battery health?
According to a study done by Battery University, the best charge cycle for a prolonged battery life is 75% to 25%; this charge cycle had the second-best results in the long run when it comes to maintaining battery capacity and battery performance.
The best being a 75–65% charge cycle. However, since this is only a 10% battery capacity, it’s not a practical charge cycle.
Additionally, the study shows a charge cycle from 100–25% Has a significantly shorter lifespan.
Enviromental Tempratures & Storage
Now there are two other factors that have an impact on your Macboooks battery health; these are the environmental temperatures you operate and store your device at, as well as the battery percentage you store your device at.
Lithium-Ion batteries can be overcharged when temperatures are elevated, and this is typically caused by the environmental temperatures in which you store or operate your device.
Apple recommends using your Macbook in temperatures between 50° and 95° F (10° and 35° C). Anything above or below this temperature can cause permanent damage to your device’s battery, thus severely reducing its battery capacity.

After three months of storing your device at 100% battery at 40°C, your apple watch will only retain 65% of its battery capacity. If the Apple watch is stored at 40% battery at 40°C, it will retain 75% of its battery capacity.
