Why Is My Blink Camera Clicking?

Having a Blink camera installed is great for at-home security. However, it’s pretty obvious to intruders that there is a camera on-site if it keeps clicking. If you want to keep your home secure then you will need a quiet camera in place.

Why is your Blink camera clicking so often?

While many people will jump to the conclusion that their camera is defective, that likely isn’t the case at all.

The most common reason for this is that the battery is low or you have the photo capture enabled. Blink cameras need to have their original batteries replaced with Energizer Ultimate AA 1.5 V Lithium Batteries or a battery of equal equivalence.

A clicking camera can be aggravating, especially when you’re trying to sleep. If your Blink camera is making clicking sounds, you won’t have to trade it in for a new one. Keep reading to find out what to do about that annoying clicking sound.

The Top Reason For Blink Cameras Clicking: Time To Change The Blink Camera’s Batteries

When you notice that your Blink camera is making clicking sounds, the most likely reason is that it needs new batteries. Now, if you’re reading this thinking “I’ve already done that and it’s still clicking”, here is where things get specific. The Blink camera comes with two AA 1.5 V lithium batteries. On average, these should last for approximately 2 years.

Once they fail, the camera will begin making clicking sounds periodically. Now, the problem many people have is that they don’t pay attention to the type of battery they get for their Blink camera. If you don’t get the right type of AA battery, then it’s likely the camera will continue to click.

Blink cameras need to have their original batteries replaced with Energizer Ultimate AA 1.5 V Lithium Batteries or a battery of equal equivalence. Basically, the replacement battery needs to be as efficient as the battery the Blink camera originally came with. Always avoid using Li-ion or AA Lithium-Ion batteries as a replacement because the camera will continue to click.

You should always avoid using any sort of alkaline-based or rechargeable battery in Blink cameras because they have the potential to cause internal issues to the camera.

One thing that throws many Blink users off about these cameras is that the camera will show that the battery is fine when in reality it needs to be replaced. If your camera is making those annoying clicking sounds but still shows a nearly full battery, you can’t always trust what it says. It could be a good idea to replace the batteries anyways.

You May Have Left The Photo Capture Enabled

Another common reason that a Blink camera could be clicking is that the photo capture was left on. When this happens, the camera will take pictures periodically and to do so in the dark it will need to activate the IR. You will likely hear the clicking noise when the camera is moving the IR filter out of the way.

This is an easy fix as well because all you need to do is turn off the “photo capture setting”. There’s no need to remove the filter or switch off the IR illumination. Some people believe turning off the IR illumination will help, but it only temporarily solves the problem of the clicking sound.

The Camera May Be At Fault

If you have double-checked to make sure you’re using the correct batteries and the photo capture setting is turned off, then the camera itself may need to be replaced. Before digging out your warranty, there’s a way to test to make sure. After all, it could still be a case of faulty batteries, so it’s a good idea to find out for sure.

To run this test, simply supply power to the Blink camera through the USB port. Does the blinking sound still occur? If the sound is gone then you need to make sure you are only using a compatible battery with your Blink camera. Anything other than Lithium 1.5 V AA batteries isn’t suitable for a blink camera.

If the camera continues to make the clicking sound while being powered through the USB port, then it’s likely that your camera is defective and will need to be replaced. The best thing to do in this situation is to contact Blink’s customer support and issue a ticket. The issues could be due to any internal problem that they may be able to repair or replace.

Final Thoughts: Why Is My Blink Camera Clicking?

Your hidden Blink cameras won’t stay hidden if there’s a clicking sound drawing attention to them. In most cases, if your camera is making that sound, the batteries need to be replaced. Make sure they are replaced with Energizer Ultimate AA Lithium 1.5 V batteries, or else the noise is likely to continue. If batteries aren’t the issue, then you may have left the photo capture setting on.
