What Are the Dimensions of a 55-inch Samsung TV?

Seems like a simple question. A 55-inch Samsung TV is 55 inches , right? Well, not exactly. There are several factors that determine a television’s dimensions . Let’s dig a little deeper into what you need to look for.

Details to Consider When Determining Measurements

When calculating the dimensions of a Samsung 55-inch TV, you have to factor in the model, if there’s a stand, and how the measurements are made.

There are currently 17 models of 55-inch Samsung TVs , ranging in size from 28 inches high (without a stand), 29 to 31 inches high (with a stand), and 48 to 49 inches in width. Although it seems counterintuitive to consider a 55-inch TV to be less than 55 inches wide , there are a couple important reasons why.

But not all 55-inch TVs are created equal.

How do you know if your 55-inch Samsung TV will fit your space?

Every TV model is a little different. The frame size around the screen can vary, as can the stand heights and depths — all which can make fitting a Samsung TV into a specific space a little challenging… unless you know all the factors, like the ones we’ve gathered in the chart below. (Note: these measurements are rounded up if it’s higher than .5, and down if it’s less than .5; so, for instance, instead of 48.3228346, we used 48).

How do you measure a 55-inch TV?

A 55-inch TV gets its moniker, not by its height and width, but by its diagonal measurement. If you start in the lower left of the screen (not including the frame) and extend a measuring tape to the upper right, you’ll get the screen size.

To determine the size of the actual TV, you need to use a little high school math. Ready to test your Pythagorean Theorem skills? Manufacturers (like Samsung) build sets using a 16:9 (or 16:10) ratio, which means if you have a 55-inch diagonal, you would have a width and height that’s closer to 48 inches wide and 27 inches tall.

Where should you put your 55-inch TV for the best viewing?

Knowing the dimensions of your TV is just part of the story. You also need to consider the size of the space where it will be placed. For optimal viewing, it’s best to sit back about three times the height of the screen for HD and 1.5 times for 4K Ultra HD.

So, using the chart above for let’s say, the Crystal UHD 4K Smart TV AU8000, you would want to sit about three and a half feet away from the set (28 x 1.5 = 42). This allows you to see the entire picture and avoid any unwanted distortion or color issues by being too close.

What do you need to know to mount your 55-inch Samsung TV on the wall?

There are a couple of things to keep in mind if you want to attach your TV to the wall. First, can the wall support it? Is there a stud (or two) where you’d like to mount it for better stability and strength? Do you have the appropriate mounting attachments for the TV?

Although some TVs are thin, they still can carry significantly more weight than a picture or shelf of a similar size (Note: even if you’re just placing it on a piece of furniture, it’s important to know that it will support the weight, as well). Take a look at this chart for reference:

All the Samsung 55-inch TVs come with a VESA and mini wall mount support, but are fixed, meaning the TV would remain in one position. There are also tilting and full-motion mounts that are available separately.

Tilting mounts work best if you’re sitting lower than your set (if it’s above a fireplace or media center), while full motion mounts allow for overall freedom, no matter where you are in the room. With an articulating arm, it can extend, swivel, and tilt for optimal viewing.

If you’re not sure how to properly attach the mount to the wall, be sure to seek out an expert, so you don’t damage your investment.

How much room should you leave around the screen?

Whether you mount it or use the standard stand, making sure you have room around the TV is important. Some experts advise at least six inches between the TV and the wall, and about four inches on all sides to give it a chance to “breathe and not overheat.
