Why Does My Ecobee Keep Going Offline?

Having a thermostat that is able to connect to your Wi-Fi router is a big deal to many, as it allows you to not only control more aspects of your thermostat, but also control your thermostat in more ways.

Ecobee is one of the leading brands for network-connected thermostats, and for a good reason. Just like any device, however, the Ecobee thermostat is not without its occasional issues.

One issue people report is that their Ecobee keeps going offline. But why does that happen?

One of the most common reasons for the Ecobee thermostat going offline is because the Internet connection keeps going offline. You can tell if this is the case by seeing if other devices go down when the Ecobee goes down. Additionally, your Ecobee could be right on the edge of your Wi-Fi router’s range.

But what else might be interfering with my Ecobee’s ability to connect to the Internet?

Why Does My Ecobee Keep Going Offline?

When your Ecobee is struggling with poor access to the Internet, it is usually due to a problematic Internet connection.

Poor Internet quality is impacting your Ecobee thermostat

If you are experiencing poor quality Internet, this will cause your Ecobee thermostat to be impacted as a result. For example, your Internet may be experiencing a slow period, which may happen when it is particularly hot.

Hot weather can cause your Internet connection to slow, by virtue of the heat causing the jacket on the broadband cables to expand and soften.

Thus, you should be mindful that you do not leave your Wi-Fi router in a room where it is exposed to extreme weather.

If your Internet connection uses an antenna, cold weather could impact it negatively, such as having snow accumulate on the antenna. This is harder to avoid, so just make sure that you don’t let snow accumulate too much in between snowfalls.

Another option is that your connection needs to be reset. Sometimes, your connection has difficulties, and unplugging the router for 15 seconds and plugging it back in can often be all it takes to get it back in working order.

However, that is not guaranteed to work, as sometimes it is something that your Internet service provider (ISP) has to work out. The best thing you can do here is let them know that the connection is down and wait for them to fix it. This may help accelerate things, as they may not be aware of the extent of the issue.

Your Ecobee is not close enough to your Wi-Fi router

This is an all-too-common problem with your Wi-Fi-enabled devices, where they get poor Internet connection due to the proximity of the Wi-Fi router.

Either the connection is completely unable to reach your Ecobee thermostat , or the Ecobee thermostat is in range, but not enough for a strong, consistent connection.

Another thing that can cause difficulties with range is the obstacles in its way. For instance, every wall, ceiling, and floor that the Wi-Fi router’s signal has to travel through to reach your Ecobee thermostat is going to make the signal weaker.

And if there are metals on those surfaces, such as copper, that will only make the signal weaker. If possible, reposition your Ecobee to be closer.

If you cannot move your thermostat any closer, however, there are other options available, the most notable of which is buying a Wi-Fi extender device.

This device is usually placed at a midpoint between the device you’re trying to improve the connection and the Wi-Fi router. Afterward, you can either connect the device to the extender with an Ethernet cord (if possible) or connect to it as you would your Wi-Fi router.

Your Ecobee is powering down

Sometimes, your Ecobee thermostat may power down on its own, usually in order to avoid being damaged.

For example, in extreme heat, the Ecobee thermostat may become overheated, which may cause the thermostat to not only become less reliable, but also reduce its overall lifespan.

Make sure that your thermostat is kept in a climate-controlled room (as best as you can provide for it, at the very least). Otherwise, you may find that you have to replace it sooner than you would like.

What can the Ecobee thermostat do online?

For those who don’t have an Ecobee thermostat, or who are looking into getting one, they may be wondering what the point is of getting a Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat is.

The main benefit is that you can check the temperature of your home from anywhere remotely, and even turn it on, off, up, or down as needed.

What do you do if your Ecobee cannot connect to the Internet anymore?

If your Ecobee’s connection to the Internet is spotty, or if it cannot get connected to the Internet at all, there are multiple steps that you should consider taking.

Reset your Ecobee thermostat

This may be a drastic step to take, but if you cannot get your Ecobee thermostat online still, then this might be the best way to fix it.

To initiate a factory reset, go to the Home screen and press Menu. Select Settings, and then select the Reset option. Here, you will find multiple options. Reset All Settings is probably the best approach to ensure that the move fixes the issue.

Other options include Reset RegistrationReset Preferences and ScheduleHVAC Equipment Settings, and Reset Contractor Info. Once it’s been reset to factory defaults, you will have to set everything up again.

Contact Ecobee customer support

If there is a defect found with your Ecobee thermostat, you may be able to get a repair or replacement covered by any relevant Ecobee warranty. Where a lot of devices only allow for a year-long warranty, Ecobee offers a three-year-long warranty at minimum.

Additionally, the issue will have to be a defect in order for the warranty to apply, as opposed to damage caused by the user. However, you can purchase an extended warranty, which may expand on both the length of the warranty and its coverage.
