How to Pair Sony WF-1000XM4

When it comes to convenience, true-wireless earbuds are the pinnacle of portability. The technology has become common enough that there is a range of different models and price points.

On the more premium, feature-rich side of the spectrum is the Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds. They feature noise cancellation and high-quality sound, without sacrificing in-ear comfort. When not in use, these true wireless earbuds rest in an ultra-portable, compact charging capsule.

Here is how to pair Sony WF-1000XM4 with all of the most-common operating systems.

How to Place your Sony WF-1000XM4 in Pairing Mode

If you’re pairing your Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds to your device for the first time, you’ll need to place your earbuds in pairing mode. After the initial pairing process, your earbuds will automatically connect to your device after removing them from the case.

To Pair your Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds to your device, place both earbuds into your ears, then hold the touch sensors on both earbuds units for 5 seconds. A beep will sound, indicating your earbuds are now ready to pair; simply go to your device’s Bluetooth list & select your device to complete the pairing process.

How to Pair on Android

This guide will be using the most recent version of Android at the time of this writing, Android 12. However, the general steps can be applied to older and newer versions of the operating system.

First, power on your android device. Next, go to the Settings menu. It may not be readily visible. In that case, search for it in the search bar and it will appear. The Settings menu is indicated by a gear icon. Open the Settings menu.

After the Settings menu has been open, scroll to Bluetooth. Tap Bluetooth, and then take the earbuds out of their case and put them into your ears. When Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds are taken out for the first time, they are already in pairing mode. Hold a finger on each earbud’s touch-sensitive sensors for around five seconds. The earbuds will let you know it was done correctly via a beeping sound in each one.

Once that has been completed, the Sony WF-1000XM4 will show up on the list of Bluetooth accessories on the Bluetooth screen of your Android device. Go ahead and tap them on the list, and the device will take care of the rest.

If there is an issue with pairing, make sure the Android device is not accidentally on Airplane mode. Airplane mode will shut off Bluetooth, cellular, and Wi-Fi. Also, make sure that the earbuds are not too far away from the device. In this case, these earbuds have a maximum range of 30 feet away from the paired device.

How to Pair on iOS and iPadOS Devices

iOS runs on iPhones and iPod Touch, while iPadOS runs on iPads. They do have different functionalities, but thankfully their pairing steps are exactly the same.

From either device, locate the Settings app. If Settings is not on any of the app screens, swipe down with one finger to pull up the Search bar, called Spotlight. Type Settings and a gray icon with gears on it will appear. Tap the icon.

Next, locate the Bluetooth section of the Settings menu and tap it. Begin the pairing process from the previous section covering Android, and the Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds will appear on the list of found devices. Tap the Sony WF-1000XM4 on the list when they appear, and they will pair with the iOS or iPadOS device.

If the WF-1000XM4s can’t be found, make sure it is within 30 feet of the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, and that Airplane Mode is turned off.

How to Pair With macOS Devices

Power on the computer, then log in using the set password, if applicable.

On the Mac, locate the System Preferences application. If it is not on the dock, it can be found via Spotlight by pressing ⌘ (or the Windows key, if using a third-party keyboard) then the Space bar at the same time. Type System Preferences and the application will appear. Press the Return or Enter key (depending on the keyboard in use).

Begin the pairing process by taking the headphones out of the case, putting them in each ear, then holding a finger on each one until they beep. The WF-1000XM4 earbuds will appear in a list of Bluetooth devices. Click “Connect” to pair them with the Mac.

When pairing, make sure the earbuds are within 30 feet of the Mac, and that Airplane Mode is disabled on the Mac as well.

How to Pair on Windows Devices

This guide will provide instructions based on Windows 10 and Windows 11. However, the overall instructions can apply to older and newer versions of Windows.

First, power on the computer, and log into the desired user account. After the system has finished starting up, press the Start button, or press the Windows key on the keyboard. Then, type “Settings”.

Once the Settings window pops up, click on Devices. This will bring a wide list of options. For now, all we have to focus on is Bluetooth & Other Devices. Click on that option to bring up the Bluetooth options window.

Take the Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds out of their case, and place them in each ear. Put a finger on the sensor of each earbud until a beep plays from them.

Next, click the little plus symbol to Add Bluetooth devices. The computer will then find the Sony WF-1000XM4 in the list of devices that can be paired. Windows will then pair with the earbuds, and then they can be used with this computer whenever they are put on.

Should there be any issues with connecting, make sure that Airplane Mode is not toggled on. If that is not the issue, ensure that the Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds are within 30 feet of the computer. In rarer instances for modern computers, make sure that the computer has Bluetooth capability. If the Windows device does not have Bluetooth, then these earbuds cannot be connected.
