How to Charge a PS5 controller

So, the PS5. The newest release from Sony PlayStation that almost nobody could buy when it first came out.

White on black, with smooth hardware that runs games at 60fps at the cleanest rate possible, even if it does look like a router with a trenchcoat, the PS5 is a remarkable piece of hardware. The controllers even more so.

They’re soft, easy, and adapt to what the player does. To go into a fluffer explanation:

The Dualsense controllers are a marvel, comfortable to hold, easy on the fingers, and feel oh so right in a player’s hands.

But, how do you charge these devices? The Dual sense controllers must require a complex and difficult method of recharging their batteries right? How else can a controller with adaptive triggers that adjust to pressure input and haptic feedback that responses to the way you play?

Thankfully, charging the PS5’s controllers is a relatively simple task. There are two methods that you can use:

  1. plug in a standard USB-C cable into both the PS5 and the controller. This allows the controller’s batteries to charge while you play, or set it down.
  2. The second method is through the PS5’s EXT port near the bottom. That is to say, below the touchpad, and between the two thumbsticks. There should be an earphone jack next to it. This jack is for charging the controller, usually at a charging station.

How to Charge a PS5 controller

The first method is to simply plug in a standard USB-C cable into both the PS5 and the controller. This allows the controller’s batteries to charge while you play, or set it down.

While the PS5 has to be turned on for power to flow to the controllers, the PS5 can be set to rest mode so you don’t have to worry about electric bills, as it will then operate at a lower power rate.

Or, if you want, you can also plug the USB-C cable into the wall if you have the appropriate socket or even a computer. I would advise against plugging them into a laptop though, as the controller will take the energy away from the laptop.

But so long as you’re capable of compensating for the increased power consumption (such as charging the laptop at the same time), you should be fine.

The second method is through the PS5’s EXT port near the bottom. That is to say, below the touchpad, and between the two thumbsticks. There should be an earphone jack next to it. This jack is for charging the controller, usually at a charging station.

A charging station is a device capable of well, charging a PS5 controller. It’s set up like a stand, and you can place the Dualsense controller there during its off time. So long as the charging station is plugged in, it will charge controllers automatically.

This is good because every PS5 controller costs $60, which is the same price as a newly released game. So you don’t exactly want to leave them lying about where something could happen to them, nor do you want them in a place where they’re not supposed to be.

Also, you may wish to avoid putting excess wear and tear on the controller. I know they’re meant to be used, and you should use them, but be sure that you’re not putting too much pressure on them.

Playing Call of Duty every day, all day, will cause the triggers to break, the buttons to go kaput, and may ruin the touchpad.

Or, worse, you could have pets, and those thumbsticks may look chewy to them.

Just, think of it this way. It’s a machine, but it’s a delicate one. Try to avoid doing damage to it if you can.

To that end, the charging cable usually supplied with a PS5 is also capable of being inserted into the same EXT slot, so if you have a charger ready to go, you can insert it there.

So, now that we’ve gotten all that out of the way, what else should you know about charging a PS5 controller?

Anything else?

Well, aside from the general “Keep it out of the reach of pets and small children, do not submerge it or expose it to extreme heat,” keeping up the controllers is fairly simple so long as they are not handled too roughly.

If any of the needed equipment to charge a PS5 controller is lost, here’s a handy guide as to how to find more.

A USB-C cable can usually be found at your local electronic or video game store. Places like Best Buy or Gamestop usually carry it and can be ordered if the equipment isn’t in stock.

In addition, you can also find charging stations at the same suppliers.

However, these are not the only tools that can charge a controller. Though, granted, they are the best choice. If you want to charge the controller faster, then you should look into purchasing a faster solution.

Wall plugs that have a 30W, the W standing for Watts, will charge your controller faster, allowing you to play your video games once again. These can charge a controller in about a 2-3 hour time frame and can be used not just for your controllers.

Iphones, Ipads, and other USB-using devices can be recharged using wall plugs.

In addition, there are also third-party charging stations and controllers that can be used on the PS5 or charge the controllers, but some products aren’t as good as the original.

But some also exceed them, so be sure to do your research first if you are thinking of buying a third-party device.

Most PS5 controllers last for about 12 hours, or about half a day, of extended playtime, so if you want to keep playing, it’s not a bad idea to just keep on the controller on a charge while you use the other one, then when the current controller runs out, you can switch.

Though granted, that might be a bit of a hassle if you’re playing multiplayer and you need both controllers.

Also, you may wish to avoid putting excess wear and tear on the controller. I know they’re meant to be used, and you should use them, but be sure that you’re not putting too much pressure on them.

So, a quick recap

  • You can charge a PS5 controller easily, be it through a charging cable or a charge station.
  • There are multiple ways to charge the controller, but it has to be done with an appropriate cable.
  • A charging station is a great help, as it operates as a safe place for controllers.
  • Try to avoid damaging the controller if at all possible. They’re expensive.
  • The battery life on a PS5 controller lasts for about 12 hours, depending on the overall condition of the controller.
