How To Turn On Aftershokz Headphones

Aftershokz headphones have been growing in popularity since they were launched on the market nearly ten years ago, in 2012. They feature a new kind of technology that helps users surmount problems associated with previous designs of headphones.

For example, how you use your headphones while remaining aware of your surroundings (for safety purposes). Aftershokz solves this problem through bone conduction technology. This enables users to jog or perform any other kind of workout safely while using the headphones.

How To Turn On Aftershokz Headphones

Although we’ll delve into this in detail, Aftershokz headphones are designed for easy operation. Typically, most Aftershokz headphones are powered on by long pressing the  volume+ button for about two seconds. To turn off the headphones, you press the same button for slightly longer, 3 seconds this time.

Ease Of Use Is Key

Given that these speakers are designed to be used on the go, the manufacturers spent a lot of effort trying to make the headphones as easy to use as possible. For example, models such as the Aftershokz Aeropex only have three buttons: the volume up and down button and a multi-functional button. Those three buttons manage everything you need to do with your Aftershokz headphones.

If you jog with your headphones on, you will appreciate the ease of use. For users doing potentially-dangerous workouts such as cycling on the road or jogging, it is essential to be aware of one’s surroundings. For example, a cyclist needs to be able to listen to the surrounding traffic. While many cyclists get around this problem using a portable speaker, this generally ruins the listening experience. Aftershokz headphones, with their bone-conduction technology, give the user the best of both worlds. Here is everything you need to know about how these amazing headphones work.

How Bone Conduction Works

Although this technology sounds a little scary, it is safe and has been around for a long time. It has been used in hearing aids and many other devices that assist people with hearing problems to hear sound. In fact, science tells us that it is through bone conduction that we can listen to our own voices. In a way, this technology has existed for as long as human beings have been around.

You understand how Aftershokz headphones differ from other traditional headphones; it is essential to know how we usually hear sound. In most cases, sound is transmitted as soundwaves through the air. Our eardrums take those soundwaves and convert them into vibrations which the inner ear, with the help of our brains, converts into meaningful sound. The problem with this may be apparent to you. If your headphone blasts sound waves into your ear, the brain tends to filter out other ambient sounds and focuses instead on the most proximate sound. If you are cycling or riding a train home, those ambient sounds that tend to get shut off include PA announcements about your train stop and the sound from surrounding traffic. This can create problems for you, ranging from minor inconveniences (missing your train stop) to outright dangers such as getting hit by a vehicle.

Aftershokz Headphones Bone Conduction

Using transducers located on each side of the Aftershokz headphones, audio is changed into mechanical energy (vibrations), which are first picked up by the cheekbones (where the Aftershokz headphones rest) before being transmitted to the ear. By doing this, the Aftershokz headphones bypass the first step of sound transmission and move the vibrations straight into the inner ear for interpretation.

Most Aftershokz headphones feature titanium in their frames, which, while being strong and lightweight, also helps in sound conduction. This, in turn, means that your ear does not get overwhelmed by sound waves, meaning that you can probably hear ambient sounds such as train stop announcements.

Operating Aftershokz Headphones

If you purchase your brand new Aftershokz headphones, they will already be set to Bluetooth mode when you turn them on. Aftershokz headphones come in two modes, namely Air and Titanium. Operating them, however, is essentially the same. Straight out of the box, you will need to turn them on. This is done by pressing the power button/volume up button for a few seconds. A beep sound will confirm to you that the headphones are turned on. Since the headphones use standard Bluetooth 5.0 technology, pairing them with your device is largely the same as most other devices.

Pairing mode is achieved by switching the headphones off first. When that is done, you will need to press the volume up button for a few seconds. The LED light on the headphones will blink blue and red, and you will hear ‘Pairing’ from the headphones. The next step is to search for the headphones on your primary audio device (phone, computer, etc.) and then connect the two.

Benefits Of Using Aftershokz Headphones

Apart from superb sound quality, there are several reasons why these headphones have grown in popularity. We are going to list down some of these reasons.

Safe To Use

The biggest concern for headphone users when working out outdoors is safety. While you want to enjoy music or listen to an audiobook, most people worry about blocking out all other ambient sounds. Aftershokz headphones solve this problem by giving you a private listening experience while simultaneously allowing you to stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Cleaner Than Standard Headphones

The fact that Aftershokz headphones do not rely on sound waves means they are placed mainly outside the ear. This lowers the risk of ear infections, which can happen when using standard earbuds. This is because we constantly touch our earphones when putting them on, adjusting the volume, etc. When the buds are placed inside the ear, there is a risk of infection. This disappears when it comes to Aftershokz headphones, as they don’t get to the inner part of your ear.
