Naruto and Naruto Shippuden were two of the biggest anime and manga series out there back in the day, and people still hold them in very high regard to this day. While those two series are over, the franchise is far from over, thanks to “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations,” starring Naruto and Hinata’s son, Boruto. Boruto is available to watch on Hulu, but how much of it can you watch there?
Hulu currently has every single episode of Boruto available on its platform. In all, Boruto has 248 episodes released as of May 11, 2022, and Hulu has every one of those episodes.
But will Boruto keep getting new episodes on Hulu? And how soon do English dubs of Boruto come out on Hulu? Find out more below.
How Many Episodes of Boruto are on Hulu?
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is kept up-to-date on Hulu with the Japanese release, which means that Hulu users do not have to go anywhere else in order to enjoy this anime. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is currently ongoing, with a total of 248 episodes released in Japanese, and Hulu has every single one. Further, it seems as though they get new episodes of Boruto shortly after they are released.
Are all episodes of Boruto dubbed in English on Hulu?
The English dub of Boruto, however, is a much more complicated affair, though the reason has nothing to do with Hulu in particular. Boruto originally aired on Adult Swim’s Toonami block on Cartoon Network, with 52 episodes dubbed in English, which was a considerable number of the episodes of Boruto released in Japan at the time. However, this is where the series stopped airing on Toonami, with Senior Vice President Jason DeMarco indicating that there were no plans of Boruto returning to Toonami.
It is speculated that the reason why Boruto stopped airing on Toonami was due to relatively lower ratings than expected, but if it is true that it was disappointing, that was not the only reason why it may have been canceled. Boruto’s English release on Toonami coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, which made things significantly more complicated for anime production, English voice acting included. Thus, with multiple different issues facing Boruto in multiple regions, it likely made sense to simply cut their losses and end the airing.
Yet, the question remains, is Boruto ever going to get more episodes dubbed into English? Well, for Hulu, their selection of dub episodes are actually far behind the number of episodes available elsewhere. VIZ, a producer of manga and anime for the United States, has about 155 episodes dubbed in English, though VIZ states that more dubbed episodes are on the way (May 17, 2022). The dub’s release has been slow, but thankfully it is still ongoing.
Will there be more seasons of Boruto?
While Boruto’s English dub is moving slowly, that does not mean that the Japanese dub of the show is not going strong. As mentioned above, Boruto has released significantly more episodes in Japanese as time has passed. Thus, you should expect that Boruto will continue to get new content for quite a while, as it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
Is the Boruto manga still going?
Not only is the manga still ongoing, it is not likely that it will end any time soon. While the original creator of Naruto did not want to continue the franchise, his former chief assistant, Miko Ikemoto, did, and he came up with the idea of centering it around the next generation of characters (as the name implies!). As far as when the manga ends, however, that is unclear, but it seems like it won’t end for quite a while yet.
Around the time of this article’s posting, the manga is roughly halfway done with its story. Since it originally started in 2016, this means that it should end sometime around 2028. However, it is possible that the manga may end sooner or even later depending on circumstances such as sales or even if the creator has a new idea.
Currently, the Boruto manga has 17 volumes released in Japan, with 14 of those volumes having been released in English. The Japanese series of volumes is up-to-date, though there are chapters released after volume 17 (which would be included in a future volume 18). The English localization of the manga is updated fairly regularly, with the 15th volume slated for an October 4, 2022 release, while 16 and 17 have yet to get an announced release date.
Is Boruto as good as Naruto?
Now, this is a question that does not have a definitive answer, as matters of taste simply do not have one. Despite this, however, there are many people who would say, definitively, that Naruto is a better anime than Boruto. And though we recognize it’s valid to enjoy Boruto as much, if not more, than Naruto, that is generally not what people feel about these series.
Some of the best measures of the quality of a show are aggregate review sites, such as IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. Boruto does not have critic reviews on either of these websites, but it does stand out that user reviews for Boruto are considerably lower than ones for Naruto or Naruto Shippuden. For example, where these two have a rating of 8.4 and 8.7 out of 10 on IMDB respectively, Boruto only has a rating of 6.9 — not a bad score by any means, but the difference is telling.
Once again, though, you should not take this to mean that Boruto is not worth watching. The two Naruto series are among the most popular anime and manga of all time, and it was always going to be a challenge to match them. If you are a big fan of Naruto, we think that you would probably have a lot of fun with Boruto.
