Does WYZE Thermostat Need a C Wire?

Because the WYZE Thermostat provides an advanced screen, it requires a constant flow of energy. However, this thermostat does not come with a battery, meaning you must connect it to a C wire, which stands for common wire, or a compatibility adapter to provide continuous power for your thermostat.

If you do not understand why your WYZE Thermostat needs a C wire or how to install one, this is the article for you. Keep on reading to find out how to install a C wire to your WYZE Thermostat or what to do if you do not have this wire.

Why Does the WYZE Thermostat Need a C Wire?

For most thermostats, the C wire is completely optional. That is because old thermostats were not advanced and could run with a battery. This battery source is great for many thermostats, but it is not suitable for the WYZE Thermostat or other advanced models.

The WYZE Thermostat includes advanced technology that requires constant power. The best way to provide this power in a way that is sufficient and affordable is by connecting it to your furnace. You do this with the help of a C wire.

In other words, your WYZE Thermostat requires a C wire in order to provide reliable and affordable power, which is supplied by your home’s furnace.

How to Connect Your WYZE Thermostat to the C Wire

If you have connected a thermostat in the past, connecting the WYZE Thermostat is very similar. The main difference is that you have to also connect it to the C wire. Even though this will require an additional step, it is easy and requires no technical training or skill.

To begin, make sure to disable the power to the thermostat. You can do this by turning off the furnace, so is not to increase any safety risks as you are properly hooking up the thermostat.

Once the power is turned off, the next step is to see if you have a C wire and connect it to the device if so. You can find out if you have the C wire by taking the current thermostat off the wall. This should expose the terminal where all of the wires are located.

Look at the wires inside. Each wire should come with a corresponding letter, such as an R. If there is a C wire, it can either be connected to the port already, or it may be tucked into the wall area.

If you have the C wire but it is not plugged in, there will be an extra wire, either colored black or blue, that is tucked into the other wiring but not connected to a port.

In the case that you have the C wire, all you need to do is plug it into the port and put the thermostat back in place. Finally, turn the power back on, and your WYZE Thermostat will be up and running as it should.

What If I Don’t Have a C Wire?

If you do not have a C wire inside the thermostat you currently have, you are not out of luck. The WYZE Thermostat comes with a convenient adapter, which makes the installation of breeze.

Assuming that you already have the G and Y wire in place, all you will need to do is install the adapter. Chances are, you already have these two wires because they are commonly used in thermostats, even thermostats that are very dated. You should not have to do anything with these wires except plug them into the port if they are not already.

To install the adapter, make sure that the power is off, once again. Even if you turned it off, there’s no harm in double-checking. Once you are sure the power is off, find the control board and use your phone to take a picture of the existing setup. Make sure you can see all the wires, the wiring colors, and accompanying letters.

If the wires are not already labeled, make sure to label the wires Y, G, R, and W. After all of the wires are labeled, disconnect them from the control board and connect them to the provided C wire adapter instead. In the instructions, you may see the C wire adapter referred to as the CWA.

After you insert these four wires into the adapter, tighten the screw using a screwdriver. This simply ensures a tight and safe connection. Then, connect the four wires into the Control Board once again. Finally, make sure all screws are secure and replace the Control Board. At this point, you have successfully installed your WYZE Thermostat without a C wire. Congratulations!

What If I am Still Having Trouble?

If you have read the owner manual and used our steps above to either locate the C wire or install the C wire adapter, we recommend specifically reaching out to WYZE.

WYZE is known for providing really great customer support to its customers. They should be able to help walk you through the process to either determine the issue or correctly install the WYZE Thermostat.

Final Thoughts

Once again, the WYZE Thermostat requires constant access to power, which can be provided through the C wire. Even though old thermostats do not need the C wire, many old housings include this wire just in case, meaning it should be relatively easy to connect your WYZE Thermostat to the old wiring.

In the case that you do not have the C wire, WYZE thought ahead by providing a C wire adapter. This adapter is super simple and easy to use. If you have all the other wires, which you should, simply plug them into the adapter, and your thermostat is up and running.

Although it may seem like a hassle to plug in the C wire or C wire adapter, this wire is not specific to the WYZE Thermostat. Instead, most modernized thermostats are being designed in such a way that this wire is required, and it is our guess that thermostats of the future will make C wires a must for everyone.
