Can I Charge My PS5 Controller From a Wall Outlet? Yes, but here’s what you need to know

Every owner of the Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) is going to own at least one DualSense controller. The DualSense controller is an incredible piece of hardware. It has loads of amazing features, including a speaker, microphone, feedback, and more.

With all of this technology, inclusive of advanced haptics, it is no wonder why it requires a recharge often. This battery-hungry controller needs juice routinely, but can you charge a PS5 DualSense controller from a wall outlet?

Can I Charge My PS5 Controller From a Wall Outlet?

You can charge your PS5 controller via a wall outlet. However, one important thing to keep in mind is that the PS5 controller draws 5 volts at 1.5 amps. (As shown below).

Because of this, the power adapter that you use must output 5 volts at 1.5 amps. Anything lower than this will simply not charge your device.

Using anything more than 1.5 amps should be fine in theory. This is because the PS5 controller is designed to only draw up to 1.5 amps. However, we would recommend sticking with an adapter that outputs no more than 2 amps. This is primarily due to PS4 controllers having issues when being used with a high voltage/amp adapter.

Additionally, another important factor is the charging cable you use. The PS5 controller requires a USB-C charging cable. However, not all USB-C charging cables are created equal. There are low-powered USB-C cables, these typically have a USB connector on the other end, and are generally used to charge your mobile devices. These types of USB-C charging cables can be used to charge your PS5 controller as they are rated to support no more than 15 watts(5 volts at 3 amps).

High-powered USB-C cables are typically used for charging more powerful devices such as laptops. MacBook chargers for example, use high-powered USB-C cables.

How Do You Know If It Is Charging

To know if your controller is charging, you can look at the DualSense controller for the visual cues that it gives off. When the DualSense controller is charging, it will give off a glow of orange. The orange color at the top will throb on and off as if it has a beating heart.

When the controller gets to the point where you no longer see the orange color pumping on and off, that means that the controller has a full charge.

Troubleshooting the Wall Outlet Method

There are likely two things to troubleshoot if you are having problems charging your controller through a wall outlet. The first is to check the USB-C charging cable you are working with. If the charging cable is damaged, then you will not be able to get power to the controller. The next thing to check out is the power brick. If the power brick does not output five volts or more, it is also not going to charge your DualSense controller.

Now that you know what to do when it comes to charging your PS5 DualSense controller, it is time to take action. The best thing to get into the habit of is working on charging up your controller at the end of each play session. When you charge it each time, then you know your controller will be ready to go when you power on the system again. Failing to charge it each time can leave you in a situation where you have a dead controller, waiting for the charge to kick in. You can charge a Sony PS5 DualSense controller from a wall outlet as long as the charging setup meets the criteria we laid out above.

The Common Variations of Charging a Sony DualSense PS5 Controller

There are many common ways that you can charge up a Sony DualSense PS5 controller. The first and most obvious is that you can make use of the Sony PlayStation 5. The other method is with the use of the Sony DualSense Charging Station. The third approach, put into practice commonly, is to use a phone or laptop charger.

Charging It via the PS5 Console

The most common way that folks will charge up their Sony PS5 DualSense controller is through the actual console. The Sony Playstation 5 console has a number of USB ports. With a USB-C charging cable, you have the ability to plug the cable into the controller, with the standard USB plug going into the console. As long as the Sony PlayStation 5 console is getting power, it will start to charge up the controller.

Using the DualSense Charging Station

The Sony PlayStation 5 also supports what is known as the DualSense Charging Station. This is an accessory from Sony which continues to be very popular among PlayStation 5 owners. With the station, you have the ability to charge two of the DualSense controllers at the same time.

The DualSense Charging Station needs to be getting power from the wall first and foremost. Once you have it plugged in, you’ll then have the ability to sit one or two DualSense controllers onto the slots of the PS5 DualSense Charging Station. This will draw power into both of the controllers at the same time, allowing them to power up and to keep your play sessions going whenever you want.

Charging via a Phone Charger

So back to the main question as it pertains to this particular article as it relates to the PS5 DualSense controller and a wall outlet. You can make use of a power brick that you have with your phone in tandem with a USB-C charging cable to charge up your DualSense controller. This is not an approach that is going to work with every setup you have, but it can be done.
